Why Upward Bound & How It Prepares Our Youth?

The Upward Bound Program has a rich history dating back to 1964 and continues to open the door of opportunity and access to higher education for eligible students across the country regardless of race, ethnicity or culture. The Moreno Valley College Upward Bound Math & Science Program is a federally funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

The Upward Bound Math and Science Program (UBMS) is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue post secondary degrees in math and science and ultimately careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

UBMS can help you prepare for college and a career in STEM…and here is why it matters:

  • STEM-related careers make up one of the fastest-growing segments of the 21st century marketplace
  • According to a report entitled “STEM: Good Jobs Now and for the Future,” released  in July 2011, workers in the so-called STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) occupations earn  26 percent more than workers in other fields
  • STEM workers of all educational levels earn more than their non-STEM peers
  • By 2018, STEM occupations will account for about 8.6 million jobs

The advantages of student participation include:
