[VIDEO] Thought Provoking Thursday – Networking Gold

You’re A Shining Star – No Matter Who You Are

[VIDEO] THOUGHT PROVOKING THURSDAY: Trades & Skills

Not long ago, there were many trade and technical colleges specifically designed for the Black Community so that at the turn of the century, they could transition from Domestic or railroad Pullman Porter work to that of someone with better hiring opportunities in the age of industry. Unfortunately today, many youth are unskilled or prepared for the workforce or to become the entrepreneurs of tomorrow. The work ethic instilled in us by some of parents and mentors was not then passed down to the generation behind us. Many reasons stand out but two in particular are that we have not simply taken youth under our wing and shown them what needs to be done. Another reason is that we have become a disposable society and would rather throw things away then repair them.

What skill or trade do you have that you need to share with the Black Youth in your community?

This Is Where You Let Everyone Get In Your Business

Southern California Black Business Expo (SCBBE) offers all businesses and community services in the Black Community a complimentary opportunity to list their business information, community events and available services in the SCBBE directory. This directory was designed to notify, inform, educate and bring the community together to help re-circulate the Black dollars into the Black Community.

Point Blank!

The Black Community CAN personally and privately be self-sustaining if we were to determine our priorities, pool our resources, re-circulate Black dollars directly back into the Black Community and become self sufficient and self reliant.

Goal Attainment

Be the Fuel/Fire Someone Needs Toward Their Goal Attainment

Many a goal is truly simple in nature yet may seem complex to the outside observer. Even if you personally know that a particular goal or dream will be a complete flop – support the individual anyway.  Support can come in the form of finances, babysitting, house cleaning, meal prep, errand running, coming to their events, sponsoring their event or product, pushing/promoting their products or event or just being a listening ear or encourager.

Lid-Like Behavior

How do you smother a fire? You put a lid on it, deprive it of oxygen or contain it. Do you know why the cleaning product is called 409? Because it took 408 attempts to get the product just the way they wanted it.  Edison tried and failed to invent the light bulb he wanted, 100 times. Michael Jordan has often said:

I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

Fire Hose Mentality

We all know the only purpose of a fire hose is to put out a fire. If you cannot find it within yourself to be supportive in the most minimal of positive ways – then don’t share your sentiments with the one trying to obtain a particular goal. That person already knows what the problem is – they need those that will contribute to the solution. Be the one that comes to them with a solution!

Nurture What You Want To Grow

MENTORING MONDAY:

What and how you nurture isn’t just about parenting or a mother to child relationship.  Being a Mentor is also an avenue and opportunity to nurture.  Fatherless young men, motherless young women, an up and coming employee all afford a situation where you should spend time, talent and even finances to help someone grow and learn in a seasoned and protected environment versus going through the school of hard knocks for every situation.

Nurture vs. Nature

We all bring our sum total experiences to the table when we interact with each other. Some people have not quite mastered the ability to interact in a positive format or in a positive setting. These same individuals are the individuals that are ripe for Mentoring. Catching them early would be ideal. Bringing them along side now is what you may have to work with.

Don’t Follow The Rats

#MENTORINGMonday:

Follow the Leader.

Follow your heart.

Follow my lead.

Follow through.

Follow in my footsteps.

Follow the Yellow Brick Road…

Follow: (verb) go or come after; move or travel behind

You never know who is watching you and when. The impact you can have on someone else may never be revealed to you but know that your words, your ways and your actions are perpetually under a microscope, particularly in this day and age of social media.

Often people believe our leadership and mentoring doesn’t begin until we complete an official certificated program or course or have received a degree in a specific subject matter. The truth is, we are leaders and mentors from the day we take our first breath and until we take our last. Intentional or not, we are all teachers (leaders and mentors) – negative or positive – and have an impact on the lives of people we come in contact with.

At some basic level we are all Leaders and Mentors but there are those that purposely choose to be in the spotlight or feel it’s their calling as a profession. Should this be the position or calling you desire, then you must also assume the lot and parcel of responsibility and representation that goes along with being a Leader and Mentor. That lot and parcel includes appearance, attitude and interaction with others, walking the walk and not just talking the talk, showing your human side, compassion and vulnerability and knowing how to carry yourself at all times all while continuously representing this mantle.

Apples Don’t Frall (fall & roll) Far

Do you want people to follow you based on your professionalism or your materialism. What image are you projecting to your Mentees. What is it exactly that you want to convey to them while you stand before them in your designer label apparel and accessories? Do you want them to listen to and follow your words or only aspire to your level of bling? Is that the maximum amount of your “shine”? Are you teaching them to feed themselves for a life time or are you just hosting over-priced hyped up events and showing them how to eat for a day?

“Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a life time.”

The Pied Piper Was Followed By A Bunch of Rats

Mentees – when looking for someone to aspire to be most like, seek out a true individual with a pure intent that never stops working on improving the inside of them self – not just the outside. Look for someone with many of those leadership qualities that we have been discussing in the past few weeks, an individual that works well in teams, is compassionate, vulnerable, a good listener, can rally the troops if need be and is committed to serving their community – not someone who is self-serving!

Non-Profit vs. For Profit

Undigested Knowledge

FRUITION FRIDAY

What Do You Do With the Knowledge You Obtain?

In his book on language, British diplomat Lancelot Oliphant (1881–1965) observed that many students give correct answers on tests but fail to put those lessons into practice. “Such undigested knowledge is of little use,” declared Oliphant.
